While leisure travel continues to remain off the charts for Singapore residents, there is hope that these essential green lanes will serve as the very first step towards the creation of <a href="https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/leisure-travel-green-lanes-can-help-changi-airport-regain-some-lost-traffic-amid-covid-19" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reciprocal tourism green lanes</a>.
In the meantime, here is a list of the countries that have existing green lane and fast lane arrangements with Singapore, and what you may expect if you choose to travel to these destinations.

Residents in Singapore seeking to travel to Brunei via the RGL must be sponsored by either a company or a government agency in Brunei, which will file an application on behalf of the applicant with the authorities.
Pre-departure to Brunei, Singapore residents must produce:

<li><a href="http://www.immigration.gov.bn/Borang%20PDF/Entry-Travel-Pass-Application-Guidelines.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Approved Entry Travel Pass</a> issued by the Brunei government</li>
<li>A negative COVID-19 PCR test result, taken 72 hours before departure at designated clinics</li>
<li>A valid visa, if applicable</li>
<li>Proof of installation of the BruHealth application</li>
<li>A valid boarding pass</li>
<li>Valid proof of payment for post-arrival COVID-19 PCR test</li>
<li>Proof of hotel reservation in Brunei</li>
</ul>
Upon arrival in Brunei, you will be isolated at your declared hotel before you are transported to a designated center for your post-arrival PCR test.
If test results are negative, you will then be allowed to proceed with your controlled itinerary via private transportation. &nbsp;
You will also be required to self-report your health through the BruHealth application throughout your stay.
Upon return from Brunei, Singapore Citizens, Permanent Residents and Long-Term Pass holders will not be required to serve a Stay-Home Notice. However, you will be required to undergo a COVID-19 test upon arrival.

Residents in Singapore seeking to travel to South Korea via the Fast Lane must be sponsored by either a company or a government agency in South Korea, which will file an application on behalf of the applicant with the authorities.
Pre-departure to South Korea, Singapore residents must produce:

<li>An <a href="http://overseas.mofa.go.kr/sg-en/brd/m_2435/view.do?seq=761275&amp;srchFr=&amp;srchTo=&amp;srchWord=&amp;srchTp=&amp;multi_itm_seq=0&amp;itm_seq_1=0&amp;itm_seq_2=0&amp;company_cd=&amp;company_nm=&amp;page=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">isolation exemption certificate</a> issued by the ROK</li>
<li>A negative COVID-19 PCR test result, taken 72 hours before departure at designated clinics</li>
<li>A valid visa</li>
</ul>
Upon arrival in South Korea, you will be required to present your passport, valid visa, and isolation exemption certificate.
You will then undergo a PCR test at Incheon Airport and remain in a centralised quarantine area designated by the ROK Government for one to two days until test results are released.
During your stay, you must follow all local COVID-19 prevention guidelines, keep to your controlled itinerary for the first 14 days, and activate the ROK Government&rsquo;s Self Health Check Mobile App.
Upon return from South Korea, you will then have to adhere to <a href="https://www.ica.gov.sg/covid-19/ArrivalSG" target="_blank" rel="noopener">prevailing Stay-Home Notice requirements</a>.

From 17 August 2020, Singapore and Malaysia have resumed cross-border travel under two schemes: the reciprocal green lane (RGL) for travellers on shorter visits, and the longer-term periodic commuting arrangement (PCA).. &nbsp;

Pre-departure to Malaysia, Singapore residents under the RGL must produce:

<li>A valid visa</li>

Upon arrival, you will be required to take a PCR test and remain in isolation until test results are released.
During your stay, you must follow all local COVID-19 prevention measures, keep to your controlled itinerary, and download the MySejahtera contact tracing app.
Upon return, you will be exempted from the Stay Home Notice requirements if you:
<ul>
<li>Obtain a negative COVID-19 PCR test at accredited facilities within 72 hours prior to departure from Malaysia; and</li>
<li>Undertake a COVID-19 PCR test at the airport/checkpoint upon arrival in Singapore and remain in isolation until test results are released</li>

Since 8 June 2020, Singapore and China have established the Singapore-China Fast Lane between six Chinese provinces and municipalities (Chongqing, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Tianjin, and Zhejiang) and Singapore.

Residents in Singapore seeking to travel to China via the fast lane must be sponsored by either a company or a government agency in China, which will file an application on behalf of the applicant with the local provincial / municipal authorities.
Pre-departure, Singapore residents must produce:

<li><a href="https://safetravel.ica.gov.sg/china/rgl/faq#annexa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A Letter of Invitation</a> issued by the Chinese provincial/municipal authorities of Chongqing, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Tianjin or Zhejiang</li>
<li>A negative COVID-19 PCR test result, taken 72 hours before departure at designated clinics</li>
<li>A valid visa</li>
</ul>
Upon arrival, you will need to undergo PCR and serology tests, and remain in a centralised quarantine area designated by the local provincial / municipal government for one to two days until test results are released.
During your stay, you must follow local COVID-19 prevention measures, keep to your controlled itinerary for the first 14 days, and download the local health QR code used in the province /municipality.
Upon return, you will be exempted from the Stay Home Notice requirements if you:
<ul>
<li>Obtain a negative COVID-19 PCR test at accredited facilities within 48 hours prior to departure from China; and</li>
<li>Undertake a COVID-19 PCR test at the airport/checkpoint upon arrival in Singapore and remain in isolation until test results are released</li>
<li>Produce the following two documents to ICA at Singapore Immigration (a) the letter from the PRC Embassy in Singapore which confirms that you were granted approval by the relevant authorities to travel to China via the fast lane; and (b) negative COVID-19 PCR test result obtained 48 hours prior to departure from China.</li>
</ul>
&nbsp;
Overall, Singapore&rsquo;s existing travel lanes feature similar mechanics to safeguard public health &ndash; requiring for travellers to take pre-departure and post-arrival PCR tests, and to stick to a controlled itinerary without using public transportation.
As Singapore builds upon these tried and tested mechanics, and expands to more green lane arrangements with countries such as <a href="https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/singapore-japan-essential-business-travel-resume-13018504" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Japan</a> and other <a href="https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/coronavirus-singapore-to-work-with-g-20-and-global-organisations-to-restart-international" target="_blank" rel="noopener">G-20 countries</a>, we can continue to have hope that international travel will make a safe and healthy return in the near future.

The Germany VTL had its first arrival of visitors on 8 Sep 2021, marking the start of this travel scheme. We at New Shan Travel are excited and look forward to the opening of the travel borders!
Before diving into the excitement, we took a great amount of time to look into what is in it for us with this new way of travelling.
Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL)
Under the Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL), fully vaccinated*&nbsp;Singapore Citizens (SCs) and Permanent Residents (PRs) may return to Singapore without having to do Quarantine! But only if provided they test negative for the PCR test upon arrival in Singapore.
Another point to note is that no applications are needed for SCs and PRs. They are able return to Singapore without the need for entry approval as long as they adhere to the VTL requirements.
*Travellers must have been&nbsp;<a href="https://safetravel.ica.gov.sg/health/vtsg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fully vaccinated</a>&nbsp;in their VTL country/region of departure or Singapore. An individual is considered fully vaccinated 14 days after he or she has received the full regimen of Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty, Moderna or&nbsp;<a href="https://extranet.who.int/pqweb/vaccines/covid-19-vaccines" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WHO EUL Vaccines</a>

Singapore Citizens (SCs) and Permanent Residents (PRs) are able to book any available direct flights from Singapore to Germany. And return on a designated VTL flight or non-VTL flight (more details below). As at the time of writing, only two airlines offer designated VTL flights: Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines. You don&rsquo;t have to present a negative Covid test to enter Germany if you meet either of the following criteria:
<ul>
<li>A Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident who have stayed in Singapore for at least the past six months.</li>
<li>Being fully vaccinated* where the final dose has been administered at least 14 days before the date of travel, and have not stayed in an &ldquo;<a href="https://www.bmi.bund.de/SharedDocs/faqs/EN/topics/civil-protection/coronavirus/travel-restrictions-border-control/II-restrictions-on-entry-from-areas-of-virus-variants-of-concern/what-restrictions-apply-to-entry-and-travel-from-areas-of-virus-variants-of-concern.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">area of variant of concern</a>&rdquo; during the last 10 days. Remember to carry proof of vaccination status. But do remember to check the airlines you have chosen, as it might require a pre-departure test. </ul>
We also recommend to get travel insurance at least 1 month before boarding. It is important to check through the requirements and coverage of the travel insurance as well. Some travel insurance would require a PCR test before departure.

Upon arrival you do need present any one of the documents below:
<ul>
<li>a valid electronic or physical copy of the Covid-19 vaccination certificate; or</li>
<li>a negative Covid-19 Antigen test result, with the test taken within 48 hours before arrival; or</li>
<li>a negative Covid-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) or POC-PCR test result, with the test taken within 72 hours before arrival; or</li>
<li>proof of recovery from Covid-19, which must be dated between 28 days and six months before travel.</li>
</ul>
When in Germany, many businesses are still in operation for anyone is fully vaccinated. There is contract tracing done wherever you go, just like in Singapore. Masks are also required when you are onboard any public transport, in stores and also, at outdoor places there is a minimum distance of 1.5 metres to follow. It is also important to know that in Germany regular masks (like cloth masks) are not allowed. The mask which are approved has got to be FFP2 or a KN95/N95. These are also available in drug stores (also know as pharmacies to us), they are known as Apotheke.
The different regions of Germany have each their own regulations for Coronavirus, do check the <a href="https://www.zusammengegencorona.de/en/current-information-for-travellers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">website</a> for any updates, or you may visit <a href="https://www.germany.travel/en/home.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Travel Germany</a>.
Overall, as a country they have two main rules, DHM Formula and 3G Rule (which applies for indoor).

<li>Distance: maintain a distance (at least 1.5 metres)</li>
<li>Hygiene: observe the hygiene rules (proper coughing, sneezing and hand washing)</li>
<li>Masking Up: Surgical masks/FFP2/KN95/N95 masks are required</li>

There are 3 main important things to do before returning to Singapore. First, you would need to submit your health, travel history and declared accommodation through the <a href="https://eservices.ica.gov.sg/sgarrivalcard/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SG Arrival Card e-service website</a>. This has to be done not earlier than three days before your date of arrival at Changi Airport, Singapore.
Part of the VTL requirements, you would also need to take a PCR test 48 hours before departure to Singapore. We recommend to make an appointment instead of doing a walk-in to take the test, especially if you decide to choose the ones which you could get the results within 3 hours to minimise additional travelling time, this express service usually would cost more.
The final thing to do is to register and pay for the PCR test which would be administered upon arrival in Singapore, which is to be done through <a href="https://safetravel.changiairport.com/#/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.
For non-Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents, you would need to apply for a Vaccinated Travel Pass (VTP), this has to be done between 7 &amp; 30 days before the intended arrival at Changi Airport, Singapore.
Make sure you have 3 main important items before you check-in at the airport. Your passport, Vaccination Certificate (Digital or Print), a Negative PCR test report.&nbsp;

Once you have arrived, there are designated lanes with signages, and officers are around to guide you on the procedures. After doing the arrival swab test, you would need to head to your declared accommodation via private transportation, and remain in isolation until you receive a negative test report.
Thereafter, you would need to go for another two more PCR test by 3pm on Day 3 and 7 from your arrival date. A booking would be needed to be done at designated clinics, and could be done through <a href="https://www.rafflesmedicalgroup.com/vtl-traveller/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.

Am I able to travel to Germany if I am not vaccinated? 
From the Ministry of Foreign Affairs <a href="https://www.mfa.gov.sg/Countries-Regions/G/Germany/Travel-Page" target="_blank" rel="noopener">website</a>, Singapore is classified as a non-risk area to Germany, so Singapore residents are still able to travel to Germany, without the need to serve quarantine upon arrival at Germany. If you have not got your proof of the full Covid-19 vaccination, you would need to provide at least one of the following before you are allowed to enter Germany:

<li>Proof of negative Covid-19 test result 72 hours prior to arrival in Germany</li>
<li>Proof of recovery from Covid-19 infection</li>
</ul>
As for returning from Germany, the country is classified under Category 2 of <a href="https://safetravel.ica.gov.sg/shn-and-swab-summary" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Singapore border measures</a>. Therefore, you would need to follow the below:

<li>Take a&nbsp;Covid-19 PCR test&nbsp;within 48 hours before departure&nbsp;at an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.moh.gov.sg/covid-19/accreditation-bodies-for-covid-19-testing" target="_blank" rel="noopener">internationally accredited or recognised lab/clinic/medical facility</a>&nbsp;and obtain a copy of the COVID-19 PCR test report</li>
<li>Take a Covid-19 PCR test upon arrival</li>
<li>Serve a 7-day SHN at an accommodation (Residence/Self-sourced hotel/Serviced apartment</li>
</ul>

Temple Street (Jordan)

Temple Street was built during the Qing Dynasty andis known as Men&rsquo;s Street as it is popular for men&rsquo;s fashion. Temple Street is also a place where you can buy souvenirs and enjoy a hot meal like the locals at the many &ldquo;Dai Pai Dongs&rdquo;.
While walking along the street, you may also be able to catch a traditional Cantonese opera performance!
Kowloon Union Church (Jordan)

Kowloon Union Church is a declared monument and is a Grade II Historic Building in Hong Kong. It is one of the earliest inter-denominational churches in Hong Kong, built by the London Missionary Society between 1930 to 1931.
As with other architectural sights in the city, this building boasts a mix of East and West in its design. The church is built with a perpendicular Gothic architecture features, with pitched Chinese-styled roof along with a nice brownish-red brick facade and battlemented tower.
Tin Hau Temple (Yau Ma Tei)

Tin Hau, the name of the temple, is literally translated to &ldquo;Goddess of Sea&rdquo;. She was worshipped by fishermen and waterfront residents to seek harvest and peace.
The temple was built in 1864, originally facing the Yau Ma Tei waterfront. As a result of land reclamation, the temple is now almost 3 km from the shore.

Formerly the Engineer&rsquo;s Office for the Water Pumping Station on Shanghai Street the Red Brick Building was classified as a Grade I historic building by the Antiquities Advisory Board in 2000. This is the only building that had not been demolished or converted for other purposes after the station ceased operation in 1911.
The building was built with special features including the red brick facade, cast iron rainwater pipes, cast iron hopper heads, arched verandas and granite coping stones, knee stones, skew corbels, and pad stones to the gable.

With the recent announcement of Singapore opening its borders and relaxing restrictions, Singaporeans can now travel to a wider range of western countries suc h as Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States! This is on top of the current VTLs to Germany and Brunei!
Before we look into our leisure plans, it&rsquo;s much better to understand what are VTLs??
VTLs are termed as Vaccinated Travel Lanes. VTLs allows Singapore locals and foreign tourists to go on a holiday and return without having to quarantine themselves! This is because VTLs are countries that are counted outside the current <a href="https://safetravel.ica.gov.sg/shn-and-swab-summary" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Travel Health Control Measures</a> &nbsp;and are an exception!
This means that other than the mandatory PCR tests before you leave and arrive into your destination, this is travelling as close as to pre COVID as you know it! There will be no SHN at home, hotels or dedicated facilities!
When can we start travelling??
The new western destinations of Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States are open to vaccinated travellers from Oct 19 2021! Subsequently, on November 15, the VTL to South Korea will be launched!&nbsp; To get more information on the latest destinations, please visit the updated list <a href="https://safetravel.ica.gov.sg/sc-pr/vtl" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>!
Travelling between multiple VTL countries are within the same trip is allowed.
Now that you know a thing or 2 about VTLs, who can travel in them??
Any fully vaccinated person will be able to utilise the VTL! If you would like to bring along your family and children, they can also go on the trip with you! For children under 12 who can&rsquo;t be vaccinated can also utilise the VTL but every child must be accompanied by 1 vaccinated adult. Children under 12 are also required to take all required PCR tests. For children below the age of 2, they are exempted from the PCR tests.
*Children age 12 will be counted by calendar year. (i.e. in the year 2021, those who are born in or after 2009)

From a VTL country flying back to Singapore

No quarantine! YES! But in order to be eligible for that, you need to ensure that:
<ul>
<li>For short-term and long-term pass holders, you need to apply for a <a href="https://eservices.ica.gov.sg/STO/VTL" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vaccinated Travel Pass (VTP)</a> between 7 and 30 days prior of your intended date of entry into Singapore.</li>
<li>All flights booked MUST be on designated VTL flights</li>
<li>Your recent 14-day travel history must be in one of the VTL countries including Singapore</li>
<li>You have to be vaccinated and present your proof of vaccination, alternatively you can present your vaccination certificates. Your final dose needs to be 14 days before your flight and needs to be approved from World Health Organisation Emergency Use Listing vaccines, listed <a href="https://safetravel.ica.gov.sg/health/vtsg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.</li>
<li>You will need to do a PCR test no less than 48 hours before your trip. For your convenience, you can take up our <a href="https://www.collinsongroup.com/en/covid-19-testing/apac/new%20shan%20travel?utm_source=shan%20travel" target="_blank" rel="noopener">COVID 19 Pre Departure Test</a></li>

Children 12 years and below do not need to apply for VTP. Permanent residents do take note you need to have valid re-entry permits.
Do note that different countries do have different entry requirements despite travelling on a VTL and may change from time to time. Most VTL countries do not need travellers from Singapore to undergo quarantine or be tested upon arrival. However, there are some countries that require testing, quarantine or both. It is important you do thorough research before booking of any travels on your own.

Here is what you need to know!
Just like any other countries under the VTL, only fully vaccinated Singapore Citizens (SCs) and Permanent Residents (PRs) can travel under the Vaccinated Travel Lane may travel to South Korea and return to Singapore without having to do quarantine. That&rsquo;s only if they are tested negative for PCR test upon arrival.

How many PCR test do I have to do?
A total of 4 PCR tests will need to be done if you are considering travelling to South Korea.
<ol>
<li>Test (with negative result) have to be done 72 hours in Singapore before arriving in Incheon International Airport, South Korea.</li>
<li>When you arrive in South Korea, you have to undergo another PCR test and proceed to your accommodation in taxi or private hire cars and is compulsory to stay in isolation until you receive your test result (negative) before you are free to roam around. You can book the test <a href="https://safe2gopass.com/index" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>. You will receive your result via the <a href="http://ncov.mohw.go.kr/selfcheck#app_2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Self Check App</a>. Location of <a href="https://www.airport.kr/ap_cnt/ko/svc/covid19/medical/medical.do" target="_blank" rel="noopener">testing centres</a> in Incheon International Airport.</li>

My granny used to sing this Cantonese opera song (帝女花 - Di Nu Hua) when she did her chores. And I would hum along whenever she was singing.
Grew up in a typical Cantonese family has actually given me the opportunity to appreciate Cantonese opera.
The origin of Cantonese opera can be dated back to the reign of Emperor Jiajing (1522-1566) of the Ming Dynasty. It was originally called Nanxi (Southern opera) and was popular in Guangdong and Guangxi at that time.
Cantonese opera is one of the major Chinese opera categories. It is a traditional Chinese art and involves music, singing, martial arts, acrobatics and acting. Cantonese opera was included in the first list of 518 state-level intangible cultural heritage elements, which was announced on 20th May 2006.

Competition Pavilion also referred as &ldquo;Growing Up&rdquo; is the winning design of the Hong Kong Young Architects and Designers Competition in 2017.
This artistic and stylish timber pavilion is located on the West Kowloon waterfront promenade. It offers stunning harbour and sunset views as well as a space for leisure, relaxation and small-scale events.

Liu Ma Kee Fermented Tofu Store

Fermented bean curd, also known as preserved bean curd/tofu cheese is widely used and is found commonly in Asia. It is also often eaten with porridge or stir-fried with vegetables as it is very salty on its own. A unique Hong Kong snack is toasted white bread spread with butter and a smear of fermented bean curd, then sprinkled with sugar. It is even better as French toast or as ingredients for a dish of pasta It may be an acquired taste to some, but it is definitely worth a try!
Liu Ma Kee Fermented Tofu Store (廖孖記) is famous for making bean products using traditional methods following a closely guarded family recipe and has been selling their preserved bean curd to locals for over 100 years! An old-school packaging design is still being used on the glass jars holding their bean curd and features an image of the founding Liu brothers. Liu Ma Kee still uses a traditional stone mill to grind their soybeans, and their fermented tofu is particularly rich in flavour.

It is often said by people to never leave Hong Kong without trying Mak&rsquo;s noodles especially if you are a fan of wonton noodles. Founded for more than 70 years, it has been recommended by Michelin Bib Gourmand for many consecutive years!
A man known as the &ldquo;Wonton Noodle Master&rdquo; Mak Woon-chi (founder of Mak&rsquo;s Noodle) brought the Cantonese-style wonton noodles from Guangzhou to Hong Kong. Originally a supper meal for the wealthy, it became more popular among the masses when the food took to the streets.
Mak&rsquo;s famous wontons are known to contain shrimps when compared to Guangzhou&rsquo;s version which had only meat &nbsp;because of Hong Kong&rsquo;s proximity to the waters.

This humble second generation dessert shop sells traditional, authentic handmade Cantonese sweets and snacks that are getting increasingly harder to find. You will likely have to queue for a bit as this nostalgic dessert shop has a loyal following. It has also always been very popular among the locals of all ages in the neighbourhood.
There is a wide range of pudding-like cakes for everyone. Unlike the fluffy cakes that we usually have, it is a firmer version with a springy texture that is best experienced by oneself.

West Kowloon, an emerging neighbourhood that boasts no shortage of gems for visitors to discover Hong Kong from a new perspective. From traditional craftsmanship, historic buildings to authentic dining experiences, you&rsquo;re bound to find something you love here!
Back in the day, West Kowloon was home to plenty of artisanal craftsmen and many of the skilled craftsmen at work in the cultural district have honed their skills over many decades.
Let&rsquo;s discover Hong Kong&rsquo;s intangible heritage through the alleys and hidden doorways of West Kowloon and discover the local treasures of Hong Kong!
Shanghai Baoxing Qipao (上海宝星时装旗袍)

A little lesson into the history of cheongsam. While &ldquo;cheongsam&rdquo; in Chinese could be used to refer to both female and male traditional attire, &ldquo;qipao&rdquo; bears a similar meaning but only refers to the female version. Apart from this, the two words have different linguistic origins as the former was translated from Cantonese, &ldquo;长衫&rdquo;, which means &ldquo;long robe&rdquo;, while the latter was originated from Mandarin, &ldquo;旗袍&rdquo;, which means &ldquo;banner dress&rdquo;.
Located on the first floor of an old commercial centre in Jordan and into the workspace of a qipao tailor who has been plying his craft for over 65 years, Master Yan Ka-man, one of the ten tailors left in Hong Kong that specialises in making these Chinese dresses.
All of Master Yan&rsquo;s work is made to measure. He has made qipaos for Miss Hong Kong contestants as well as celebrities like Anita Mui, Maggie Cheung, and Michelle Yeoh. To preserve this invaluable part of Chinese history and to better inherit the craftsmanship of making qipao, Master Yan hosts classes with fashion and design students on the art of qipao making.
Biu Kee Mahjong (標記麻雀)

Four players huddle around the square wooden table, stacking Lego-like tiles. Each player takes turns grabbing and discarding tiles from the Mahjong tile stack. This is a common sight in a typical Chinese household at family gatherings, parties, and celebrations.
Mahjong, a tile-based game developed in China during the Qing dynasty, is a popular game played among Chinese communities. Each tile features different patterns and symbols that are traditionally engraved by hand.
Mr. Cheung Shun King at Biu Kee Mahjong is one of the last few remaining artisan mahjong tile carvers left in Hong Kong. He inherited the shop from his father and has been honing his craft for over 50 years. The art of hand carving mahjong tiles is so unique, it&rsquo;s even listed as one of Hong Kong&rsquo;s Intangible Cultural Heritages by the local government. Visitors can head to Biu Kee to buy a set of Cheung&rsquo;s high-quality, old school mahjong tiles, and even customise the characters or patterns on their mahjong tiles as unique souvenirs or gifts.
Sindart (先達商店)

Once a status symbol, slippers have been worn in Hong Kong for centuries. Traditionally, women embroidered silk at home with dragons, phoenix and goldfish, or floral patterns such as blossom, which was then shaped into footwear by men. A single pair can take several months to create.
Founded in 1958, Sindart (先達商店) is one of the oldest stores in Hong Kong that makes and sells traditional handmade Chinese embroidered slippers. This small shop is now owned by the granddaughter of the founder, Miru Wong. She began practicing embroidery with her grandmother since primary school, and is the third generation in her family to run Sindart. The young businesswoman studied Visual Communication in university, and is proud to continue this unique cultural heritage. While the store still carries many traditional designs, she is also constantly coming up with new designs to appeal to a larger market.
The owner of this 63-year-old small business even holds weekly workshops for people who are keen to learn the vanishing art of Cantonese embroidery.

In Hong Kong Tourism Board&rsquo;s (HKTB) and the MICHELIN Guide&rsquo;s latest series &ldquo;Hong Kong Chefs&rsquo; Playbook&rdquo;, chefs Shane Osborn and Vicky Cheng take viewers to local destinations that inspire their culinary masterpieces.
Shane Osborn of one-MICHELIN-starred Arcane, is one of the most recognisable culinary figures in Hong Kong&mdash;a status boosted after his participation in Netflix&rsquo;s culinary competition, The Final Table. Chef Osborn walks us through the streets of Wong Tai Sin, a peaceful refuge from the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle in the series&rsquo; second installment, introducing viewers to the only landlocked district in all of Hong Kong and home to multiple temples and gardens.
Wong Tai Sin serves as a breath of fresh air at the heart of the city. With an abundance of greenery and open parks, Wong Tai Sin is the perfect source of inspiration for chef Osborn and his mission of promoting sustainability and lessening the industry&rsquo;s impact on the environment in Hong Kong.

An oasis complete with its own waterfall, the Chi Lin Vegetarian restaurant inside the Nan Lian Garden serves as the perfect backdrop for chef Osborn and host Debbie Wong as they talk about his work in Hong Kong. The restaurant serves vegetarian cuisine which is unique as it is a centuries-old practice.
Known for his passion for plant-based cuisine, chef Osborn shares how locally sourced ingredients play a big part in his own cooking practices and the significance of sustainability and ethical sourcing.

Within Nan Lian Garden&rsquo;s 3.5 hectares lies another picturesque location, the Song Cha Xie teahouse. Here, chef Osborn and Wong talk about the cultural significance of tea while surrounded by the tranquil atmosphere of the garden. The teahouse offers a variety of teas and dim sum daily and is the perfect accompaniment to soak in the zen-like environment.
Chef Osborn later takes viewers to the Tai Shing Street Market in the neighbourhood. This is both a dry and wet market, with products that range from fruits to fish. Tai Shing Street Market, which also houses various street food stalls for its shoppers, is open all week. For him, supporting and buying from local markets and businesses is the best way to help local farms and reduce carbon footprint.

Chef Vicky Cheng also shares this same sentiment about supporting local producers. He believes that visiting the market himself and building relationships with the shop owners makes for a more meaningful and sustainable way of sourcing ingredients. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Canada, chef Cheng trained at some of the best restaurants in Toronto and New York before he returned to the city where he was born. In 2016, he set up his restaurant VEA and won a Michelin star in just one year of operations.
In another episode of the &ldquo;Hong Kong Chefs&rsquo; Playbook&rdquo;, chef Vicky introduces viewers to the quaint fishing town dubbed the &lsquo;Venice of Hong Kong&rsquo; &ndash; Tai O. Known for scenic views of the Tai O river and its village of stilted houses, Tai O is his go-to when looking for a calming escape from the city and his source for ingredients for his restaurants VEA and Wing.

With fishing as one of the primary industries of the village, seafood is abundant in local restaurants and dried fish and shrimp paste are widely known. Chef Cheng recounts how he was introduced to their specialty shrimp paste through a friend whose family runs the Sing Lee Shrimp Paste &amp; Sauce Manufacturer. Operating for over 80 years now, the manufacturer&rsquo;s products are still handmade traditionally and entirely out of local products. The pair then try their hand at making the shrimp paste, giving viewers a glimpse of the process from drying up to its packaging.

Next up, authentic local stops! Yick Cheong Ho and The Crossing Boat Restaurant are small and humble establishments that showcase the best of Tai O&rsquo;s specialties. Before their meal, chef Cheng and Wong make a quick stop at dried seafood shop Yick Cheong Ho to check out the dried seafood the village is renowned for. The store has a wide range of products, from dried scallops to fish maws, and is Chef Cheng&rsquo;s source for rare dried velvet rice shrimp.
Dried seafood is an integral part of Cantonese cuisine, and The Crossing Boat Restaurant showcases this among stir-fried dishes, and steamed rice wrapped in lotus leaves. As they talk over their meal at the restaurant, viewers are treated to scenic views of the river and the historic stilted houses around them.
Back in his kitchen at VEA, chef Vicky treats viewers to a behind-the-scenes look at his signature salted fish dish. A staple of his for over six years now, chef Vicky&rsquo;s choice of salted fish and cabbage was inspired by lyrics from HK singer George Lam&rsquo;s song &ldquo;分分鐘需要你&rdquo; (Without the Two of Us) that he first sung to his wife. Inspired by Tai O and his visits with his wife, he infuses his love for food and his wife through his dish.

Quality food is made from quality ingredients and Chef Vicky Lau knows this well as her Michelin starred restaurant, Tate Dining Room, is known for its creative twists on Hong Kong&rsquo;s seasonal products curated around Hong Kong&rsquo;s culinary identity. Known for its fusion of Chinese-French cuisine and bridging the traditional with modern, owner and chef Vicky Lau is considered an icon in Hong Kong&rsquo;s culinary scene.
In this episode of the four-part series, &ldquo;Hong Kong Chefs&rsquo; Playbook&rdquo;, Lau, together with host Debbie Wong, take us on a trip through Yau Ma Tei, the bustling historical district in the heart of West Kowloon. Before we get to cooking, we first need the essentials.
Dubbed as a cook&rsquo;s paradise, Shanghai Street is swamped with stores brimming with pots, pans, and almost anything one might need in a kitchen. Known for its quality and affordable price points, this street is heaven for anyone that loves to cook.
Walking along the street, you&rsquo;ll find shops dedicated to equipment for different kinds of food. From all-wooden utensils to stainless steel equipment, there&rsquo;s a store for every cook, be it a dim sum master or a pastry chef. Shops also house top-of-the-line gadgets for mixing, blending, frying, and other machines you want in a kitchen or restaurant.

A key destination for every chef on a trip to Shanghai Street is Man Kee Chopping Board. The establishment has been around for over half a century, offering quality and custom-made chopping boards made from a variety of woods to suit the needs of any cook. The wood acts as a sponge absorbing each hit of the knife, making it safe and ideal for chefs that do a lot of chopping.
Owner Mike Au shares tips on the proper maintenance of the wooden boards, gifting one to Chef Vicky which she could use at her restaurant. Such wooden chopping boards aren&rsquo;t as popular as they used to be, so Man Kee&rsquo;s is truly a hidden gem for those who still appreciate the benefits of a good block of wood for their cooking.
Now with all the right tools, it&rsquo;s time to gather the ingredients.

Just a few minutes down the road from Shanghai Street is the Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market. Established way back in 1913, the market was recognised as a Grade II Historic Building in 2009, and many of the buildings in the area --despite many additions and renovations, still retain their original facades from back in the day.
To quote Chef Vicky, &ldquo;if only the walls could talk&rdquo;, as a trip to the market is like a trip back in time, with all the historical architecture and the Yau Ma Tei Theatre right across the street. The market is at its busiest during the early hours of the morning when fruits pass in and out of the market for delivery and is definitely the best place for a chef such as Vicky to find inspiration for her dishes.
Speaking of inspiration, chefs also find this in the meals that they eat. After the trip to the market, Chef Vicky and Debbie take us to Lau&rsquo;s go-to for claypot rice, and the restaurant she would always bring visiting friends to when in the country.

The Covid Essential Pack List

<h2 style="text-align: left;">How to stay safe on the go? The Covid Essential Pack List</h2>
As the borders are starting to re-open, it is time to be prepared to pack for what we need before we fly off! The virus has just made the packing essentials for travel to be slightly longer. We definitely will feel better with a peace of mind with these essentials. Read on for the details!
1. Face Mask
This is now the most important thing to pack. Mask are required on all flights, and also at most countries mask is going to be needed at certain places.&nbsp; The right mask protects not only you, and also the people around you.

It is really important to have the mask to fit your face to trap or prevent the infected air particles, and not leak out or in from your mask. If you choose a cloth mask, you can double up with a surgical mask underneath. And if your mask slips down as you are talking, you should find a better-fitting mask.
Do remember to pack extras, just in case the strap snaps or it gets soiled or wet. You should pack enough to change daily when travelling.
2. Portable Hand Sanitizers

From young, I believe you would have learnt in school that you should wash your hands before and after eating. Of course, if you could, washing with soap and water would be better than using hand sanitizers. But when travelling, sometimes it might be hard to get to do so. Having hand sanitizers are sure to be better than wipes, but the wipes could be used for cleaning elsewhere instead. Make sure it has more than 60% alcohol in the hand sanitizers.
3. Travel-pack Disinfectant Wipes
Not to clean your hands with it, but it is important to wipe down your belongings that your touch regularly, like your phone, sunglasses, and wallet. You can also use it to wipe down high touch surfaces which you might encounter with, especially on the airplane
4. Power Bank for Personal Electronics

This might have been an essential for most of us before, but this is even more important now. Your phone is going to be used to do contact tracing, contactless payment and sometimes to view the menu at certain eateries overseas. You would need your phone to be powered up throughout the day.
5. At home Covid Test Kits
Some countries still require us to do an additional test on a further day after the arrival, and some countries do accept a self-test kit result. These test kits would also provide a peace of mind while travelling. Be a responsible traveller for others and yourself.
6. Travel Documents (Passport, Visas, Travel Insurance, Vaccination Certificate)

Your passport is the item which entitles you to travel to and from foreign countries. I am sure this should be at the top of your list. Make sure you take note of your passport&rsquo;s validity!
With the virus on going, some countries would require an additional Visa before entering the country. Do remember to always check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs <a href="https://www.mfa.gov.sg/Where-Are-You-Travelling-To" target="_blank" rel="noopener">website</a> for entry requirements at each country!
Are you Covid covered? Having a travel insurance is a requirement to enter most countries. You would have to make sure the coverage of the travel insurance you have purchased has met the requirement of each country.
To be able to travel, most countries require travellers to be vaccinated. You could still travel to some countries if you are not vaccinated, but it comes with a lot of requirements. For the people who got their vaccines in Singapore, and are staying in Singapore, you could get your vaccination certificate through <a href="https://www.notarise.gov.sg/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Notarise</a>. It is almost immediate once you have all your details keyed in. Remember to check that it reflects your passport details on the certificate.

Start your trip off at selected ports off the west coast of the US and Canada. Make your way towards the inside passage, famed for its fjords and tidewater glaciers and be sure to make stops at Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway and Glacier Bay National Park. 1. Juneau
The only state capital in the US that can only be accessed by airplane or boat, Juneau sits between Mount Roberts and Juneau. It is a compact but vibrant city with plenty of things to do. Salmon also gathers in Ketchikan waters during their migration cycle with also gave Ketchikan the name &ldquo;Salmon capital of the world&rdquo;

3. Skagway
Fueled by the Gold Rush, Skagway was the heart of this historic journey whereby hopeful miners descended and made their way through to the White Pass to the Yukon River and finally to the Klondike. Today, Skagway brings to life the rich history of this journey made by many before with its Broadway avenue, where only buildings have been preserved.

The main highlight of the inside passage is Glacier Bay national park. With 7 glaciers spilling and depositing ice into the ocean, it makes for a spectacular sight. Visitors to Glacier Bay National Park usually have sometime to take in the sights, the cruise will move slowly to allow you to watch for calving, an act whereby ice breaks off the end of a glacier. Even without seeing calving, you can hear the cracks and groans of the glaciers.
