2020 is coming to an end and it has been a wild ride. When the pandemic hit us, it feels like the whole world came to a halt. Some struggled, some sees this &lsquo;break&rsquo; as an opportunity but most importantly, we Singaporeans stay united as we all slowly get used to this &lsquo;new normal&rsquo; in our daily lives.
So what have we been up to? We sent our staff on courses to refresh their skills, gained new knowledge out of their job scope and industry trends. Most importantly, we embarked on a rebranding journey.
Founded in 1972, New Shan Travel Service Pte. Ltd.&nbsp;has been in the market for close to 50 years. We have evolved progressively to become one of the biggest and most respected travel agencies in Singapore.&nbsp;
We provide a full spectrum of travel-related services. Icon: The word &ldquo;新&rdquo; is taken from New Shan&rsquo;s Chinese name 新新旅行社. The green represents a refreshing start and new shoots of growth. The chop/stamp design is akin to a Chinese seal, which is a nod to New Shan&rsquo;s extensive collaborations, past and present, with China&rsquo;s travel industry and Chinese partners and customers.
Logotype: We retain the blue colour in the rest of the logo, which had been our corporate colour since inception. The now leaner and more modern fonts as compared to that of the old logo represents greater agility and ability in responding to the evolution of the travel industry.

The Germany VTL had its first arrival of visitors on 8 Sep 2021, marking the start of this travel scheme. We at New Shan Travel are excited and look forward to the opening of the travel borders!
Before diving into the excitement, we took a great amount of time to look into what is in it for us with this new way of travelling.
Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL)
Under the Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL), fully vaccinated*&nbsp;Singapore Citizens (SCs) and Permanent Residents (PRs) may return to Singapore without having to do Quarantine! But only if provided they test negative for the PCR test upon arrival in Singapore.
Another point to note is that no applications are needed for SCs and PRs. They are able return to Singapore without the need for entry approval as long as they adhere to the VTL requirements.
*Travellers must have been&nbsp;<a href="https://safetravel.ica.gov.sg/health/vtsg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fully vaccinated</a>&nbsp;in their VTL country/region of departure or Singapore. An individual is considered fully vaccinated 14 days after he or she has received the full regimen of Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty, Moderna or&nbsp;<a href="https://extranet.who.int/pqweb/vaccines/covid-19-vaccines" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WHO EUL Vaccines</a>

Singapore Citizens (SCs) and Permanent Residents (PRs) are able to book any available direct flights from Singapore to Germany. And return on a designated VTL flight or non-VTL flight (more details below). As at the time of writing, only two airlines offer designated VTL flights: Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines. Our all-inclusive package has it included - <a href="https://www.newshan.com/tour/12d-go-guided-germany/68" target="_blank" rel="noopener">12D Go Guided Germany Package with Trafalgar</a>.
You don&rsquo;t have to present a negative Covid test to enter Germany if you meet either of the following criteria:
<ul>
<li>A Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident who have stayed in Singapore for at least the past six months.</li>
<li>Being fully vaccinated* where the final dose has been administered at least 14 days before the date of travel, and have not stayed in an &ldquo;<a href="https://www.bmi.bund.de/SharedDocs/faqs/EN/topics/civil-protection/coronavirus/travel-restrictions-border-control/II-restrictions-on-entry-from-areas-of-virus-variants-of-concern/what-restrictions-apply-to-entry-and-travel-from-areas-of-virus-variants-of-concern.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">area of variant of concern</a>&rdquo; during the last 10 days. Remember to carry proof of vaccination status. But do remember to check the airlines you have chosen, as it might require a pre-departure test. </ul>
We also recommend to get travel insurance at least 1 month before boarding. It is important to check through the requirements and coverage of the travel insurance as well. Some travel insurance would require a PCR test before departure.

Upon arrival you do need present any one of the documents below:
<ul>
<li>a valid electronic or physical copy of the Covid-19 vaccination certificate; or</li>
<li>a negative Covid-19 Antigen test result, with the test taken within 48 hours before arrival; or</li>
<li>a negative Covid-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) or POC-PCR test result, with the test taken within 72 hours before arrival; or</li>
<li>proof of recovery from Covid-19, which must be dated between 28 days and six months before travel.</li>
</ul>
When in Germany, many businesses are still in operation for anyone is fully vaccinated. There is contract tracing done wherever you go, just like in Singapore. Masks are also required when you are onboard any public transport, in stores and also, at outdoor places there is a minimum distance of 1.5 metres to follow. It is also important to know that in Germany regular masks (like cloth masks) are not allowed. The mask which are approved has got to be FFP2 or a KN95/N95. These are also available in drug stores (also know as pharmacies to us), they are known as Apotheke.
The different regions of Germany have each their own regulations for Coronavirus, do check the <a href="https://www.zusammengegencorona.de/en/current-information-for-travellers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">website</a> for any updates, or you may visit <a href="https://www.germany.travel/en/home.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Travel Germany</a>.
Overall, as a country they have two main rules, DHM Formula and 3G Rule (which applies for indoor).
<ul>
<li>Distance: maintain a distance (at least 1.5 metres)</li>
<li>Hygiene: observe the hygiene rules (proper coughing, sneezing and hand washing)</li>
<li>Masking Up: Surgical masks/FFP2/KN95/N95 masks are required</li>
</ul>

There are 3 main important things to do before returning to Singapore. First, you would need to submit your health, travel history and declared accommodation through the <a href="https://eservices.ica.gov.sg/sgarrivalcard/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SG Arrival Card e-service website</a>. This has to be done not earlier than three days before your date of arrival at Changi Airport, Singapore.
Part of the VTL requirements, you would also need to take a PCR test 48 hours before departure to Singapore. We recommend to make an appointment instead of doing a walk-in to take the test, especially if you decide to choose the ones which you could get the results within 3 hours to minimise additional travelling time, this express service usually would cost more.
The final thing to do is to register and pay for the PCR test which would be administered upon arrival in Singapore, which is to be done through <a href="https://safetravel.changiairport.com/#/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.
For non-Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents, you would need to apply for a Vaccinated Travel Pass (VTP), this has to be done between 7 &amp; 30 days before the intended arrival at Changi Airport, Singapore.
Make sure you have 3 main important items before you check-in at the airport. Your passport, Vaccination Certificate (Digital or Print), a Negative PCR test report.&nbsp;

Once you have arrived, there are designated lanes with signages, and officers are around to guide you on the procedures. After doing the arrival swab test, you would need to head to your declared accommodation via private transportation, and remain in isolation until you receive a negative test report.
Thereafter, you would need to go for another two more PCR test by 3pm on Day 3 and 7 from your arrival date. A booking would be needed to be done at designated clinics, and could be done through <a href="https://www.rafflesmedicalgroup.com/vtl-traveller/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.
[Not applicable for travellers entering Singapore with effect from 18 October 2021, 2359hrs.]
Am I able to travel to Germany if I am not vaccinated? 
From the Ministry of Foreign Affairs <a href="https://www.mfa.gov.sg/Countries-Regions/G/Germany/Travel-Page" target="_blank" rel="noopener">website</a>, Singapore is classified as a non-risk area to Germany, so Singapore residents are still able to travel to Germany, without the need to serve quarantine upon arrival at Germany. If you have not got your proof of the full Covid-19 vaccination, you would need to provide at least one of the following before you are allowed to enter Germany:

<li>Proof of negative Covid-19 test result 72 hours prior to arrival in Germany</li>
<li>Proof of recovery from Covid-19 infection</li>
</ul>
As for returning from Germany, the country is classified under Category 2 of <a href="https://safetravel.ica.gov.sg/shn-and-swab-summary" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Singapore border measures</a>. Therefore, you would need to follow the below:
<ul>
<li>Take a&nbsp;Covid-19 PCR test&nbsp;within 48 hours before departure&nbsp;at an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.moh.gov.sg/covid-19/accreditation-bodies-for-covid-19-testing" target="_blank" rel="noopener">internationally accredited or recognised lab/clinic/medical facility</a>&nbsp;and obtain a copy of the COVID-19 PCR test report</li>
<li>Take a Covid-19 PCR test upon arrival</li>
<li>Serve a 7-day SHN at an accommodation (Residence/Self-sourced hotel/Serviced apartment</li>
</ul>

Vaccinated Travel Lane - Overview

<h2>Vaccinated Travel Lane &ndash; All Countries</h2>

VTLs &ndash; Travelling during COVID times
With the recent announcement of Singapore opening its borders and relaxing restrictions, Singaporeans can now travel to a wider range of western countries suc h as Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States! This is on top of the current VTLs to Germany and Brunei!
Before we look into our leisure plans, it&rsquo;s much better to understand what are VTLs??
VTLs are termed as Vaccinated Travel Lanes. VTLs allows Singapore locals and foreign tourists to go on a holiday and return without having to quarantine themselves! This is because VTLs are countries that are counted outside the current <a href="https://safetravel.ica.gov.sg/shn-and-swab-summary" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Travel Health Control Measures</a> &nbsp;and are an exception!
This means that other than the mandatory PCR tests before you leave and arrive into your destination, this is travelling as close as to pre COVID as you know it! There will be no SHN at home, hotels or dedicated facilities!
When can we start travelling??
The new western destinations of Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States are open to vaccinated travellers from Oct 19 2021! Subsequently, on November 15, the VTL to South Korea will be launched!&nbsp; To get more information on the latest destinations, please visit the updated list <a href="https://safetravel.ica.gov.sg/sc-pr/vtl" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>!
Travelling between multiple VTL countries are within the same trip is allowed.
Now that you know a thing or 2 about VTLs, who can travel in them??
Any fully vaccinated person will be able to utilise the VTL! If you would like to bring along your family and children, they can also go on the trip with you! For children under 12 who can&rsquo;t be vaccinated can also utilise the VTL but every child must be accompanied by 1 vaccinated adult. Children under 12 are also required to take all required PCR tests. For children below the age of 2, they are exempted from the PCR tests.
*Children age 12 will be counted by calendar year. (i.e. in the year 2021, those who are born in or after 2009)

From a VTL country flying back to Singapore

No quarantine! YES! But in order to be eligible for that, you need to ensure that:
<ul>
<li>For short-term and long-term pass holders, you need to apply for a <a href="https://eservices.ica.gov.sg/STO/VTL" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vaccinated Travel Pass (VTP)</a> between 7 and 30 days prior of your intended date of entry into Singapore.</li>
<li>All flights booked MUST be on designated VTL flights</li>
<li>Your recent 14-day travel history must be in one of the VTL countries including Singapore</li>
<li>You have to be vaccinated and present your proof of vaccination, alternatively you can present your vaccination certificates. Your final dose needs to be 14 days before your flight and needs to be approved from World Health Organisation Emergency Use Listing vaccines, listed <a href="https://safetravel.ica.gov.sg/health/vtsg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.</li>
<li>You will need to do a PCR test no less than 48 hours before your trip. For your convenience, you can take up our <a href="https://www.collinsongroup.com/en/covid-19-testing/apac/new%20shan%20travel?utm_source=shan%20travel" target="_blank" rel="noopener">COVID 19 Pre Departure Test</a></li>
</ul>
Children 12 years and below do not need to apply for VTP. Permanent residents do take note you need to have valid re-entry permits.
Do note that different countries do have different entry requirements despite travelling on a VTL and may change from time to time. Most VTL countries do not need travellers from Singapore to undergo quarantine or be tested upon arrival. However, there are some countries that require testing, quarantine or both. It is important you do thorough research before booking of any travels on your own.

Annyeonghaseyo Korea! You heard the news? Yes, we can now travel to South Korea under the Vaccinated Travel Lane!
Here is what you need to know!
Just like any other countries under the VTL, only fully vaccinated Singapore Citizens (SCs) and Permanent Residents (PRs) can travel under the Vaccinated Travel Lane may travel to South Korea and return to Singapore without having to do quarantine. That&rsquo;s only if they are tested negative for PCR test upon arrival.
*Travellers must have been&nbsp;<a href="https://safetravel.ica.gov.sg/health/vtsg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fully vaccinated</a>&nbsp;in their VTL country/region of departure or Singapore. How many PCR test do I have to do?
A total of 4 PCR tests will need to be done if you are considering travelling to South Korea.
<ol>
<li>Test (with negative result) have to be done 72 hours in Singapore before arriving in Incheon International Airport, South Korea.</li>
<li>When you arrive in South Korea, you have to undergo another PCR test and proceed to your accommodation in taxi or private hire cars and is compulsory to stay in isolation until you receive your test result (negative) before you are free to roam around. You can book the test <a href="https://safe2gopass.com/index" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>. You will receive your result via the <a href="http://ncov.mohw.go.kr/selfcheck#app_2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Self Check App</a>. Location of <a href="https://www.airport.kr/ap_cnt/ko/svc/covid19/medical/medical.do" target="_blank" rel="noopener">testing centres</a> in Incheon International Airport.</li>
<li>If you are staying in South Korea for more than 8 days, you are required to take another PCR test on the 6/7 days in South Korea. You can find the designated PCR Test Clinics <a href="https://www.mohw.go.kr/react/popup_200128_3.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.</li>
<li>You need to have a valid PCR Test done not more than 48 hours before your flight back to Singapore.</li>
</ol>
What other things do I need to take note of?
Similarly, like other VTLs, in your 14 days of travel history, you must only be in either Singapore or South Korea.
For short term visitors, make sure to buy your travel insurance with a minimum of 30M KRW coverage. You also have to apply for K-ETA -&gt; <a href="https://www.k-eta.go.kr/portal/guide/viewetaapplication.do" target="_blank" rel="noopener">electronic travel authorisation</a> which will cost about SGD$11 and is non-refundable even if application fails.
End of Year School Holiday is near; can I bring my kids to South Korea via the VTL?
If you are looking at bringing your little ones to South Korea for the holiday via the VTL, we are sorry to disappoint. So far, it is known that children under 12 years of age who are unvaccinated are not allowed on VTL flights.&nbsp;

Like our dining in rules here in Singapore, there are some rules which you need to abide in South Korea as well.
After 6pm, only groups of 6 are allowed to gather IF at least 4 in the group are fully vaccinated. Unvaccinated people can only gather in groups of 2.

In Hong Kong Tourism Board&rsquo;s (HKTB) and the MICHELIN Guide&rsquo;s latest series &ldquo;Hong Kong Chefs&rsquo; Playbook&rdquo;, chefs Shane Osborn and Vicky Cheng take viewers to local destinations that inspire their culinary masterpieces.
Shane Osborn of one-MICHELIN-starred Arcane, is one of the most recognisable culinary figures in Hong Kong&mdash;a status boosted after his participation in Netflix&rsquo;s culinary competition, The Final Table. Chef Osborn walks us through the streets of Wong Tai Sin, a peaceful refuge from the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle in the series&rsquo; second installment, introducing viewers to the only landlocked district in all of Hong Kong and home to multiple temples and gardens.
Wong Tai Sin serves as a breath of fresh air at the heart of the city. With an abundance of greenery and open parks, Wong Tai Sin is the perfect source of inspiration for chef Osborn and his mission of promoting sustainability and lessening the industry&rsquo;s impact on the environment in Hong Kong.

An oasis complete with its own waterfall, the Chi Lin Vegetarian restaurant inside the Nan Lian Garden serves as the perfect backdrop for chef Osborn and host Debbie Wong as they talk about his work in Hong Kong. The restaurant serves vegetarian cuisine which is unique as it is a centuries-old practice.
Known for his passion for plant-based cuisine, chef Osborn shares how locally sourced ingredients play a big part in his own cooking practices and the significance of sustainability and ethical sourcing.

Within Nan Lian Garden&rsquo;s 3.5 hectares lies another picturesque location, the Song Cha Xie teahouse. Here, chef Osborn and Wong talk about the cultural significance of tea while surrounded by the tranquil atmosphere of the garden. The teahouse offers a variety of teas and dim sum daily and is the perfect accompaniment to soak in the zen-like environment.
Chef Osborn later takes viewers to the Tai Shing Street Market in the neighbourhood. This is both a dry and wet market, with products that range from fruits to fish. Tai Shing Street Market, which also houses various street food stalls for its shoppers, is open all week. For him, supporting and buying from local markets and businesses is the best way to help local farms and reduce carbon footprint.

Chef Vicky Cheng also shares this same sentiment about supporting local producers. He believes that visiting the market himself and building relationships with the shop owners makes for a more meaningful and sustainable way of sourcing ingredients. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Canada, chef Cheng trained at some of the best restaurants in Toronto and New York before he returned to the city where he was born. In 2016, he set up his restaurant VEA and won a Michelin star in just one year of operations.
In another episode of the &ldquo;Hong Kong Chefs&rsquo; Playbook&rdquo;, chef Vicky introduces viewers to the quaint fishing town dubbed the &lsquo;Venice of Hong Kong&rsquo; &ndash; Tai O. Known for scenic views of the Tai O river and its village of stilted houses, Tai O is his go-to when looking for a calming escape from the city and his source for ingredients for his restaurants VEA and Wing.

With fishing as one of the primary industries of the village, seafood is abundant in local restaurants and dried fish and shrimp paste are widely known. Chef Cheng recounts how he was introduced to their specialty shrimp paste through a friend whose family runs the Sing Lee Shrimp Paste &amp; Sauce Manufacturer. Operating for over 80 years now, the manufacturer&rsquo;s products are still handmade traditionally and entirely out of local products. The pair then try their hand at making the shrimp paste, giving viewers a glimpse of the process from drying up to its packaging.

Next up, authentic local stops! Yick Cheong Ho and The Crossing Boat Restaurant are small and humble establishments that showcase the best of Tai O&rsquo;s specialties. Before their meal, chef Cheng and Wong make a quick stop at dried seafood shop Yick Cheong Ho to check out the dried seafood the village is renowned for. The store has a wide range of products, from dried scallops to fish maws, and is Chef Cheng&rsquo;s source for rare dried velvet rice shrimp.
Dried seafood is an integral part of Cantonese cuisine, and The Crossing Boat Restaurant showcases this among stir-fried dishes, and steamed rice wrapped in lotus leaves. As they talk over their meal at the restaurant, viewers are treated to scenic views of the river and the historic stilted houses around them.
Back in his kitchen at VEA, chef Vicky treats viewers to a behind-the-scenes look at his signature salted fish dish. A staple of his for over six years now, chef Vicky&rsquo;s choice of salted fish and cabbage was inspired by lyrics from HK singer George Lam&rsquo;s song &ldquo;分分鐘需要你&rdquo; (Without the Two of Us) that he first sung to his wife. Inspired by Tai O and his visits with his wife, he infuses his love for food and his wife through his dish.

Known for its fusion of Chinese-French cuisine and bridging the traditional with modern, owner and chef Vicky Lau is considered an icon in Hong Kong&rsquo;s culinary scene.

Walking along the street, you&rsquo;ll find shops dedicated to equipment for different kinds of food. From all-wooden utensils to stainless steel equipment, there&rsquo;s a store for every cook, be it a dim sum master or a pastry chef. Shops also house top-of-the-line gadgets for mixing, blending, frying, and other machines you want in a kitchen or restaurant.

A key destination for every chef on a trip to Shanghai Street is Man Kee Chopping Board. The establishment has been around for over half a century, offering quality and custom-made chopping boards made from a variety of woods to suit the needs of any cook. The wood acts as a sponge absorbing each hit of the knife, making it safe and ideal for chefs that do a lot of chopping.
Owner Mike Au shares tips on the proper maintenance of the wooden boards, gifting one to Chef Vicky which she could use at her restaurant. Such wooden chopping boards aren&rsquo;t as popular as they used to be, so Man Kee&rsquo;s is truly a hidden gem for those who still appreciate the benefits of a good block of wood for their cooking.

Just a few minutes down the road from Shanghai Street is the Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market. Established way back in 1913, the market was recognised as a Grade II Historic Building in 2009, and many of the buildings in the area --despite many additions and renovations, still retain their original facades from back in the day.
To quote Chef Vicky, &ldquo;if only the walls could talk&rdquo;, as a trip to the market is like a trip back in time, with all the historical architecture and the Yau Ma Tei Theatre right across the street. The market is at its busiest during the early hours of the morning when fruits pass in and out of the market for delivery and is definitely the best place for a chef such as Vicky to find inspiration for her dishes.
Speaking of inspiration, chefs also find this in the meals that they eat. After the trip to the market, Chef Vicky and Debbie take us to Lau&rsquo;s go-to for claypot rice, and the restaurant she would always bring visiting friends to when in the country.

As the borders are starting to re-open, it is time to be prepared to pack for what we need before we fly off! The virus has just made the packing essentials for travel to be slightly longer. We definitely will feel better with a peace of mind with these essentials. Read on for the details!
1. Face Mask
This is now the most important thing to pack. Mask are required on all flights, and also at most countries mask is going to be needed at certain places.&nbsp; The right mask protects not only you, and also the people around you.

It is really important to have the mask to fit your face to trap or prevent the infected air particles, and not leak out or in from your mask. If you choose a cloth mask, you can double up with a surgical mask underneath. And if your mask slips down as you are talking, you should find a better-fitting mask.
Do remember to pack extras, just in case the strap snaps or it gets soiled or wet. You should pack enough to change daily when travelling.
2. Portable Hand Sanitizers

From young, I believe you would have learnt in school that you should wash your hands before and after eating. Of course, if you could, washing with soap and water would be better than using hand sanitizers. But when travelling, sometimes it might be hard to get to do so. Having hand sanitizers are sure to be better than wipes, but the wipes could be used for cleaning elsewhere instead. Make sure it has more than 60% alcohol in the hand sanitizers.
3. Travel-pack Disinfectant Wipes
Not to clean your hands with it, but it is important to wipe down your belongings that your touch regularly, like your phone, sunglasses, and wallet. You can also use it to wipe down high touch surfaces which you might encounter with, especially on the airplane
4. Power Bank for Personal Electronics

This might have been an essential for most of us before, but this is even more important now. Your phone is going to be used to do contact tracing, contactless payment and sometimes to view the menu at certain eateries overseas. You would need your phone to be powered up throughout the day.
5. At home Covid Test Kits
Some countries still require us to do an additional test on a further day after the arrival, and some countries do accept a self-test kit result. These test kits would also provide a peace of mind while travelling. Be a responsible traveller for others and yourself.
6. Travel Documents (Passport, Visas, Travel Insurance, Vaccination Certificate)

Your passport is the item which entitles you to travel to and from foreign countries. I am sure this should be at the top of your list. Make sure you take note of your passport&rsquo;s validity!
With the virus on going, some countries would require an additional Visa before entering the country. Do remember to always check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs <a href="https://www.mfa.gov.sg/Where-Are-You-Travelling-To" target="_blank" rel="noopener">website</a> for entry requirements at each country!
Are you Covid covered? Having a travel insurance is a requirement to enter most countries. You would have to make sure the coverage of the travel insurance you have purchased has met the requirement of each country.
To be able to travel, most countries require travellers to be vaccinated. You could still travel to some countries if you are not vaccinated, but it comes with a lot of requirements. For the people who got their vaccines in Singapore, and are staying in Singapore, you could get your vaccination certificate through <a href="https://www.notarise.gov.sg/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Notarise</a>. It is almost immediate once you have all your details keyed in. Remember to check that it reflects your passport details on the certificate.
